The Middle School Jump

We have spoken to several students who have been the big kids on campus, but what happens when the transition is being the little fish in a big pond? We speak to children on how they can deescalate scenarios they may face when making that jump to middle school. It can be very difficult to transition. The class clown that was known in 5th grade, can easily translate into the wrong attention from 7th and 8th graders(in a typical middle school).  What we have found works for children is to focus on yourself, and to not bring unnecessary attention. However, this does not always work, bullying can happen at random. Which is why its critical as parents to have an open line of communication with your children, so they feel comfortable to speak with you on anything affecting them at school.

Another tactic is to stay with your core group of friends you have developed in elementary school. We aren’t saying don’t make new friends. However, the comfort a child has with a long term friend and expressing how their school experience is going can aid one another to a great school year. Those are our tips for now until next time.
